In addition to her clinical care she always knows the patient and family well, in a way that shows that she has gone above and beyond to connect with them.
Jessica Carson is one of those nurses who truly goes above and beyond, not just with her medical skills but in how she cares for her patients. She looks at the patient as a whole person, and her compassion is showcased in everything she does. I’ll always remember the time she cared for a patient with metastatic cancer who was facing the end of his life. As his continuity of care nurse, she took it upon herself to not only care for him but also support his family during such a difficult time.
When the patient couldn’t attend his daughter’s wedding due to his critical condition, Jessica stepped in and turned his hospital room into a celebration. Over the course of a few days, she filled it with beautiful wedding decorations so that his daughter and her fiancé could hold a ceremony in the room, allowing him to be part of his daughter’s special day. She even set up a Zoom call so he could virtually attend the actual wedding. It wasn’t just about doing her job as a nurse; her heartfelt actions brought so much joy to the family during such an incredibly tough time. This is just one of many instances where Jessica goes above and beyond for her patients.

Working alongside Jessica is always a pleasure. She’s always willing to help and never forgets the human side of nursing. She’s not only a fantastic nurse but also a truly wonderful human being.

It is a privilege to work alongside an RN like Jessica. Not only is she an excellent and expert clinician, but she also cares for her patients with empathy and respect. We work together frequently, and she often guides the clinical team in patient care. She cares for the sickest patients with efficiency and evidence-based care. She excels in individual patient care and is also often the charge RN on the unit. Her leadership skills show on a busy day with seemingly impossible situations, where she prioritizes and coordinates care for the entire unit, supports other nurses, and can ‘make it happen’. In addition to her clinical care she always knows the patient and family well, in a way that shows that she has gone above and beyond to connect with them. She has been a patient advocate, often centering the clinical team to look at the whole patient and has often initiated essential conversations with patients and families. I really enjoy working with Jessica. She demonstrates excellent nursing care at the bedside, as a leader, and as an empathetic person connecting with her patients. She is also an incredibly warm and thoughtful person and an excellent all-around coworker.

I have had the pleasure of working with Jessica Carson over the last three years. As a bedside nurse, she is compassionate, caring, and knowledgeable. I have watched her give her absolute best to family members and patients on their worst days. As a charge nurse, she is as good as it gets. Everyone knows that when Jess is in charge, the unit is in good hands. No matter the situation, Jess is willing to step in and lend a helping hand. Somehow, she finds a way to be in ten different places at once. The MICU family is so lucky to have such an amazing team member, she truly makes our unit go round.

I feel privileged to work alongside Jessica Carson every day. She provides compassionate and competent care to her patients and is a demonstrated leader as a charge nurse and as chair of our unit’s professional development council. A recent example stands out in my mind of the excellent nursing care Jessica provides:
We had a young patient who was unfortunately diagnosed with a devastating illness, and her partner and family made the difficult decision to transition her to comfort-focused care. Jessica was relentless in advocating for this young woman’s comfort during the several days she took care of her, working collaboratively with the pharmacy and the medical team to ensure this patient was comfortable at the end of life. It took incredible attention to detail and time management to ensure there were no lapses in medication administration. Jessica navigated the emotional complexities of this situation with sensitivity. She took time to educate family members, she listened to them, she cried with them, and she cared for them in small ways that made a huge difference to the family’s experience with losing a loved one. Jessica’s commitment to this patient and her family ensured that the patient died peacefully and with dignity, with her family at her side. This is but one example of the professionalism, compassion, and dedication she exhibits on a regular basis.
