Several times I saw Jessica redo something for my mother that she saw might cause her some discomfort.
First I would like to comment that every person in this hospital from the cleaners to the kitchen staff to the aides to the nurses to the front door security throughout the ED, 3rd Floor and 5th Floor has been an incredibly caring and considerate individual.
That being said, Jessica Garland, night nurse on the 3rd Floor, still stands out. I am my mom's primary caregiver so I stayed with Mom day and night throughout her 4 day stay here. During this time, Jessica proved herself to be of exceptional standards. Several times I saw Jessica redo something for my mother that she saw might cause her some discomfort.
Some examples include 1. Going out of her way to get a sheet to put over mom (who is 88 yrs by the way) because the blankets are a little rougher and she knew mom would feel better with a softer sheet against her skin. 2. Changing the location of her IV because the ED put it right in the crook of her harm and it was stinging her at times. It wasn't necessary, but it made all the difference to my mom. 3. Changing the location of the catheter tube holder on her leg because she knew mom liked to cross her legs and that it would eventually rub her the wrong way. 4. Being proactive in collecting a urine sample before it was ordered because she knew the Drs would want one because of urinary issues, which of course they did.
All of this was done with a cheerful, can do/will do attitude. Light-hearted joking lifted our spirits and a truly sincere willingness to do whatever necessary for both my mom and myself to make our stay here as pleasant as possible. Jessica Garland is a real gem! Please honor her for it.
