The JFC does not often get individual recognition, and I believe it's because of the flow in the JFC; patients and families see many different nurses, so how can they choose just one? JFC's little faces are well recognized in the DFCI family, and due to the smaller numbers compared to the adult population, all aspects of pediatric cancer are housed in one clinic. The clinic is run by nurses, managed by nurses, educated by nurses, and the workflow is led by nurses. The infusion nurses rotate as venous access nurses and resource nurses, charge and work in the procedure room for port removal and LPs, and even take vital signs and rooming on certain days. The ONNs work on teams but cover each other as needed. The NPs rotate and see all disease groups and collaborate with the ONN and infusion. It truly is a dance, and the baton is often passed. But no matter where you are in the clinic, you will see the kind smiles, offers of help, and nurses reminding others of kiddos' preferences.
Many of our nurses volunteer for functions using their personal time to support our population to have some "normalcy." They walk in the JFC walk wearing their patients' t-shirts and have gone on hikes taking pictures for those kids unable to. The ONNs will pick up the prescriptions and reprint as many calendars as needed to review them with multiple family members. The nursing team needs to collaborate closely with BCH, make admissions as smooth as possible, share bereavement together, and collaborate in research labs. In the last few years, the clinic has had much change and growth. Including new leadership, staff turnover, new chemotherapy electronic charting (twice), starting a new mentor program, a primary nursing program, and working with nursing students, just to highlight a few. In short, the JFC is a very special place. Stop by any day, and you will see the teamwork, compassion, love, selflessness, and commitment continue to improve the treatment of pediatric cancer, and possibly a dance party or dress-up day.
***
Our clinic has hired over 17 new nurses over the past 2 years. We have started a mentor program that has helped the morale of the clinic. We have had a lot of changes with the management, nursing roles, and chemo systems. Despite this, our clinic has grown stronger and more supportive as a group. Oftentimes, I hear from patients and families how we really make a difference and that we are like family to them. We meet people where they are and educate, support, and advocate their concerns. I feel privileged to work with such a dedicated group of people and want my co-workers to get the credit they so deserve.
