Her kindness is what made her stand out. She demonstrated a genuine concern for my grandmother's well-being
From the first moment that I walked into my grandmother's hospital room, I was comforted by nurse Joanne Hong. Her presence was a constant, grounding my family and me as we waited through the difficult experience of my grandmother's intubation and all the challenges that came with it. Joanne was incredibly knowledgeable. She took the time to patiently explain every step of the process to us, to engage with us, and to answer our questions as they came up. There were so many wonderfully smart doctors and nurses who came through my grandmother's room, but Joanne surpassed them all. Her kindness is what made her stand out. She demonstrated a genuine concern for my grandmother's well-being, a desire not just to fix what was wrong in a medically necessary way but to consider my grandmother's comfort, her worries and fears, and her wellness on every level. After adjusting her medicine, she adjusted her pillows. After checking her breathing, she pulled out an extra blanket. After drawing her blood, she smoothed my grandmother's hair back so it wasn't in her eyes. She spoke to my grandmother like she was a human being worthy of love and care, not just a patient. That is the work of not just a nurse but also a true healer, and that should be rewarded.
