His manager reports 2 instances that are extraordinary examples of John’s reflecting the Providence mission.
1. John had agreed to precept a senior OHSU student nurse. John co-ordinated communication between himself, the student, the Nurse Manager and the clinical faculty to design a precepted experience that would satisfy the syllabus requirements, ensure that patients received quality care and help the student understand the multi-faced profession of nursing. The communication was on-going through-out the semester and resulted in a positive change in the student’s attitude and in the care he provided for patients.
2. John admitted a patient who has been admitted frequently for a recurring infection who was very angry and abusive to staff. As John began to care for this man, he was subjected to verbal abuse and racial epithets. John continued to provide exceptional care. John reported the situation to his manager and told her that he had become defensive and frustrated. His manager reports that she was very impressed with John’s self-awareness but more so with his commitment to providing the best care, even under circumstances such as the one he found himself in.
