I am nominating Jonathan Flanders, who worked with other team members to help me through a critical situation in my life. After months of stomach and digestive issues, I began to pass blood and decided to go to the hospital. In order to monitor me closely, I spent several nights in the hospital. Jonathan helped me understand the treatment plan they were following for me and also educated my wife on the plan. Each encounter was explained as part of the plan.
When my wife and I were in discussions with one of the physicians, and we felt that he didn't understand our concerns or questions, Jonathan helped communicate with the doctor so that our frustrations were minimized and communications improved. He continued to follow up with the doctor multiple times and improved overall communications between us. We appreciate the knowledgeable and caring way my care was handled.

I have had the pleasure of witnessing Jonathan's daily compassion for patients. As many units go, ours can be quite challenging and he is amazing with all patients and family he encounters.
There is one patient who Jonathan truly demonstrated such empathy and grace. This patient was dealing with some very difficult circumstances and had been for quite awhile. The hospital setting can be extremely stressful for patients and at times tensions run high and care can be difficult. Jonathan's gentle touch, kind demeanor, and most importantly empathy allowed this patient to develop trust with the staff on our unit. During the shifts they were together the patient opened up about the difficulties she had encountered and he was able to give the patient the care she needed (through communicating with physicians and case management).
Often times the ICU setting can be fast moving and scary for the patient. Jonathan reminds us of the importance of "seeing the patient", stepping back, and remembering why we are here.

Jonathan is very deserving of receiving the DAISY Award for having a positive attitude and going above and beyond for his patients and coworkers. He goes beyond his daily duties to make sure that everyone is having a great day, co-workers and patients alike. He is one of a kind. He works hard, is always positive, and professional. He is always helpful and goes the extra mile. He is always happy and smiling and ready to work. Our patients and associates love him! Jonathan is truly an extraordinarily, compassionate nurse!
