I wanted to recognize Joseph for the care he put towards a patient with mental health issues in our department. This child was assumed to have been sexually assaulted and trafficked to the point where she was mentally incapable of taking care of herself and catatonic. She arrived at our department not speaking to any staff and was fearful of male caregivers. Typically, we would assign a female RN, but Joseph really stepped up to make sure that this patient knew that she was taken care of and that she could trust him in our department. He walked with her hand in hand down the hallways to make sure she could ambulate well, spoke with her in a soft and comforting tone, and stayed with her at her bedside for over an hour, putting blankets on her and offering her reassurance. This quality of care is unheard of in the ER since the pace we move at is enough for us to give a great quality of care, but Joseph went above and beyond excellent care. What an incredible role model to change this girl's life and future.
