Juli Hildreth has exceptional clinical assessment skills and is a true patient advocate. Juli is an outstanding Labor & Delivery nurse and night charge nurse. She is very caring and compassionate person who is a true patient advocate. To prove this point, I would like to share the story of a patient Juli cared for in Maternal observation.
The patient was only 24 weeks pregnant and come in with severe abdominal pain. During her initial assessment, the patient told Juli that she had experienced blurred vision over the past month and now she couldn't see anything out of her right eye. Juli questioned the patient further and found out she had discussed her vision problem with her obstetrician and was referred to an opthalmologist, but never received any treatment or answer as to why she was losing her vision. Juli called report to the OB on call and received orders to address her obstetrical complaints and discharge the patient home with instructions to follow-up with the opthalmologist. Juli insisted that she would not discharge the patient until her vision had been addressed and asked him to come see the patient in the middle of the night. After additional testing, it was determined that the patient had a large meningioma brain tumor causing her to go blind. Dr. F was consulted and performed a 7 hour surgery to restore her vision. As a result of Juli's persistence and unwavering commitment to serve as the patient advocate, this patient received the treatment she needed and will be able to experience the joy of seeing her first born child when he arrives next month.
