She was the one who held me while the anesthesiologist inserted the spinal block. I was terrified, in incredible pain, and wanted my husband with me so badly. She kept me as calm as possible and was my biggest supporter while my labor was at its worst.
I was induced to have my second baby. Julia was my nurse when I arrived and then again the next day. I’d had a previous traumatic birth that resulted in an emergency c-section, and a lot of my trauma from that birth was from providers refusing to listen to me. I had wanted as much of a natural birth as possible for this birth, but was basically forced into an induction because I was 42 weeks gestation and my midwives had told me they wouldn't support me past 42 weeks. Julia actually showed that she was listening to my concerns and desires. She worked with me to try and maintain the birth that I was hoping to have, even though it was starting in a way I didn't want. Unfortunately, when I was in active labor, the midwife who was on duty was one that I didn't care for and I knew was not supportive of VBAC from my prenatal appointments. The midwife kept trying to increase Pitocin more and more and was quite annoying about it. Julia continued to be the only one in the room who seemed to be listening to me. She listened when I said that my body wasn't ready for a Pitocin increase. She believed me when I said that something felt wrong, and she went to get assistance. She was completely supportive at every step of the way, even more so than my doula or husband! Right at shift change, this labor took another turn for the worse, and I was going to have to have another emergency c-section. Julia had known how much I didn't want to have another c-section. She spoke to me in such a respectful way and comforted me when I was scared for my baby and myself, all while continuing to help me cope with my very painful labor. She went completely above and beyond when she worked late so that she could stay with me through my c-section. She was the one who held me while the anesthesiologist inserted the spinal block. I was terrified, in incredible pain, and wanted my husband with me so badly. She kept me as calm as possible and was my biggest supporter while my labor was at its worst. Besides being able to come home with my beautiful baby boy, Julia is the silver lining in another traumatic birth. When I think back on the day, there was a lot of bad that happened, but I am able to focus on Julia's kind professionalism, and it helps me process everything that happened.
