Julie was the labor and delivery nurse taking care of me when I gave birth to my son. She was extremely compassionate and constantly told me how strong I was and what a great job I was doing. This is exactly what I needed to hear!
I labored all day, getting stuck at 8cm for a few hours because my son's head was transverse. The attending doctor came in and suggested various medicalized solutions, however, once he left Julie suggested we first try moving me into a couple different positions to twist my son slightly. She first put me on my side with a peanut ball between my legs. This immediately strengthened my contractions. She then moved me again to another position and within a few contractions I was feeling like I wanted to push and my cervix was completely gone. Soon thereafter I delivered my son! The doctor confirmed to my husband later that he was planning to suggest I have a C-section, so I believe her intervention was critical and timely.
Her actions saved everyone money and also made my recovery time after birth much better. She got my labor rolling again when everyone else had decided I had stalled out. I am very thankful she was my nurse that day!
She told us she had recently taken a training about "spinning babies" and in my case, she used that knowledge well. To me, Julie exemplifies the impacta caring, highly skilled nurse can have on patient outcomes.
