My daughter, E was admitted to the TCH PICU and stayed there for three nights. The experience is a blur, from my calling 911, to my daughter needing immediate medical care, to her slight recovery, then bad reaction to a platelet transfusion, and finally, to a slow and steady full recovery. My husband and I were in disbelief at the severity of the illness our super-healthy active teen had developed. The ordeal is over, and at times I have flashbacks. But those flashbacks are always mitigated by the memory of Kara Berg, RN.
Kara Berg, RN, met my daughter as she was admitted to the PICU. Of all the wonderful staff, I remember Kara. With intensity, skill, and calm, yet warm, professionalism, she went about ensuring that E was properly hooked up to all the pumps and monitors, etc. She explained what she was working on, and answered every question I had with knowledge and patience.
Kara was responsive to E's needs. She fulfilled not only E's medical needs, Kara also met E's psychological needs. As soon as E was on the upswing medically, Kara took care of E's psyche by washing her hair and braiding it. They joked and chatted. Kara helped E's spirit recover from the physical trauma. And, by watching how wonderful Kara was with E, she helped us, as parents, to begin to recover from the mental shock we had experienced.
Kara's nursing skill and genuine warmth, left us feeling like TCH was the very best place we could have brought our daughter. Sure, the doctors, all the residents, and other nurses were very fine, but it was Kara that made the place special for us.
