Kareen Ferrer has many years of service in the NorthBay Cancer Center as an infusion nurse. She has a depth of oncology knowledge and experience that includes cancer treatment toxicities and infusion requirements. Kareen’s many years of experience have qualified her to be an expert clinical supervisor, but she has also been called upon to manage the day to day operations of the cancer center medical and infusion clinics. As you can imagine, this required a steep learning curve to go from infusion nurse to clinical supervisor. Despite the challenges of this role transition, she still continues to be a resource for the infusion clinical staff. In addition, she is sometimes called upon to provide direct patient care, which she does with skill and compassion. Kareen also serves on multiple committees in the system, including physician meetings, serving as a nurse liaison for cancer center services.  She troubleshoots Cancer Center needs such as scheduling, staffing, and other treatment-related issues on a daily basis. Altogether, Kareen Ferrer provides nursing leadership not only for the Cancer Center but also for the NorthBay system in general.

When I first started working at the infusion center and got to know Kareen, she welcomed me like I had been a part of her team for a long time. I have worked for Northbay >10 years and working with Kareen and the rest of the infusion clinic has been wonderful. It makes a whole lot of difference when you have a leader who extraordinary at what she does.

Kareen is an awesome supervisor who inspires and motivates the whole team.  It has been a pleasure knowing and working with Kareen, who is very supportive and knowledgeable of anything that relates to hematology-oncology and is a great mentor. Kareen is very reliable and open to new ideas or suggestions, recognizes staff achievements, and is very easy to talk to but, at the same time, maintains professionalism at all times. Always looking forward to working at the infusion clinic, knowing that my supervisor makes my work environment fun.

The majority of the patients know Kareen, which shows that she is not only a supervisor but also a nurse who has a connection with the infusion clinic patients and somebody who made an impression or impact in our patients' lives enough for them to always remember her and talk to her when they come to their infusion appointments.

I would like to nominate Kareen Ferrer for the Daisy Award because she is a fearless leader. Every time there is a difficult situation, she always helps us solve the problems. When someone called out and we can't find anyone to come in to take care of our cancer patients, Kareen would volunteer to take on an assignment to rescue the day. Without her, it would be very chaotic to survive sometimes.

I’d like to nominate our nurse manager, Kareen Ferrer. She stepped into this role at a time of many changes within our institution, including within our own department (often having to manage/lead without a cancer center director the last couple of years). 

First and foremost Kareen is an exceptional nurse to patients, patients absolutely love and adore her. But now, in her leadership role here, she only wants the best for our patients and our staff. She fosters an environment that encourages our staff to provide exceptional care and function to their fullest potential. She goes above and beyond to try to increase morale and recognize our staff- including EVERYONE’S birthdays, which during these times of change is crucial and needed.   

Kareen is a wonderful, intelligent, amazing and EXCEPTIONAL nurse leader- NorthBay is lucky to have her!!

She has dedicated herself to make the cancer center the best workplace in the organization. This is reflected in the ratings of highest patient care evaluation scores in the ambulatory setting. She consistently goes above and beyond for staff members and for patients. She creates an atmosphere of positivity and teamwork. She cares about any issues and addresses them head-on with genuine concern. NorthBay is lucky to have such an effective, competent, professional, and caring nurse manager like Kareen. She is highly respected by patients and their families, as well as, all staff members at every level.  Simply put, she is the best!!
