His smile behind teary eyes told Karen that for that very second, he felt less lonely and full of peace and happiness, surrounded by loved ones in honor of his 90th birthday.
Karen recently took care of a patient after he suffered a heart attack at a local assisted living facility. The patient was well known to the community as he served as a volunteer for many years at the hospital. The patient had also recently lost his son and wife tragically. The patient was managing okay, but in between good moments, he would have sudden outbursts of heavy, uncontrollable sobs, crying, "I was just thinking about my wife," and speaking of how much he missed his wife and how lonely he was. He had dementia, so also would often forget that his wife had passed, and had to be reminded over and over again that the love of his life is no longer here. The patient recently celebrated his 90th birthday in the hospital. With permission, Karen went to the store to get him his cake of choice, a yellow cake with chocolate frosting and invited his son, daughter-in-law, and three grandsons to the bedside to celebrate his birthday, making a special exception to the visitor policy. Karen provided music and played The Beatles at the patient's request after they sang Happy Birthday to him. His smile behind teary eyes told Karen that for that very second, he felt less lonely and full of peace and happiness, surrounded by loved ones in honor of his 90th birthday. Karen is a perfect example of how a nurse can truly bring happiness and love to our sick patients. Karen put the patient and his family first, making sure he knew how much he was loved and cared for.
