My father was a patient at your facility and passed away at the age of 93. He had prostate cancer and a few minor issues and I felt he would not make it through this last hospitalization. I would like you to understand that every single person I came into contact with on the 4East Unit was wonderful, kind and understanding. They would all ask if there was anything I needed and even gave me snacks. They had no knowledge that my father had served 20 years as a major in the Air Force and he was a WWII B17 bomber pilot with over 30 missions. Or, that some of his planes came back with over 100 holes and he got himself and his crew home safe. They did not know my father was a loving and kind father. When he fell comatose, they continued to speak to him and said his name. Kari did all of the above mentioned, but she also included me. She consoled me, she listened to me, she gave me information, she talked me through the entire process of what would need to be taken care of when my father passed. She empathized when I blubbered and cried. We did not want to leave him alone so I would spend the night and wait for my brother to relieve me in the mornings. I would go home and shower change and go into work for a few hours. The first time Kari was off duty, I was a mess, devastated. She was my rock. I was so happy when she came back to be my father's nurse. My Father was proud to serve his country and the VA should be proud of the entire staff. Kindness and respect are special skills that are not learned in a classroom. I am deeply grateful.
