Karin championed a new procedure where we can now collect blood from the umbilical cord attached to the placenta after birth, thus eliminating the newborns having to be drawn.
Karin is an amazing nurse. She championed a new program in our department to change our process on how we initially collect blood from our newborn babies. When our babies are initially born, they have to have a lab draw to determine their blood type. These babies were having to be poked for a lab draw sometimes within the first few hours of life causing undue pain for the infants and interrupting critical bonding time with the parents. Karin championed a new procedure where we can now collect blood from the umbilical cord attached to the placenta after birth, thus eliminating the newborns having to be drawn. Sometimes change is hard to deal with and doing this was not without its challenges from the staff and doctors, but Karin continued to prove this was the best practice for our newborns and she won! We now use this as our standard of practice. Karin went above and beyond her job duties to help improve the quality of care we provide here at Saint Mary's.
