I would like to nominate Kate Harris for the DAISY award. I just received a call from a patient that she worked with. This is a synopsis of the conversation that occurred.
“A patient called this morning to leave a message for you. She wanted to let you know how appreciative she was of you taking the time to work with her on looking for a place to stay while in rehab. She mentioned that you went above and beyond with showing her pictures of different facilities and making her feel comfortable enough to go to one of them. She really enjoys speaking with you and knows that you have her best interest while trying to help her recover.”
Kate went above and beyond to try and find a facility that this patient was willing to go to. She spent several hours working with the patient, bringing a computer to her bedside, and reviewing several facilities. It was very important to the patient to go to a Catholic facility that was well rated. Kate did extensive research to find catholic facilities, reviews, and pictures and worked for 3 days with this patient to ultimately get to rehab. This patient has historically declined rehab placement during every admission. Kate took the extra time to listen to her preferences and educate her regarding the facilities that would meet some of those preferences. Kate participated in many 3 way calls with facilities to empower the patient to ask questions and make educated decisions regarding her continued care.
