She brought me chocolate and cookies and milk, as well as a grief bear for moms who don’t get to go home with their babies.
Katherine (Kat) Child was my nurse who was with me primarily during my stay in antepartum after my water broke with one of my twins. This was the start of a very hard journey of hospital stays and NICU experience. While I was in antepartum I was on bed rest for the most part and wasn’t able to get up unless I needed to use the restroom which for someone who doesn’t like to be still was quite hard. Kat was my night nurse and I would look forward to seeing her every day she was working at 7:00 pm because I knew even if it was a hard day I would have a good night because she was there. She always went out of her way to make sure I was happy and felt safe. She made sure I never felt like a burden and pressing my nurse call button was never an issue and anything I needed was always important. I knew my stay at St. Luke’s was going to be long and I was most nervous about the nurses I would get because they can make or break your day/ night but I never had to worry about that if Kat was there. A week and a half into my stay I ended up having to have an emergency c-section and had my boys at 23 weeks and 1 day. I was told 2 days later while still in antepartum that one of my sons had a grade 4 brain bleed and he wasn’t going to make it. Kat was my nurse that night. She went out of her way to be as gentle and supportive as she could be. She brought me chocolate and cookies and milk, as well as a grief bear for moms who don’t get to go home with their babies. That’s a few things of many that she went out of her way to do to make me feel better…considering everything. My son did pass away, and that bear definitely did more than we thought it would need to do for me. I get the pleasure of seeing Kat still in passing since our other son is still in the NICU being our little rockstar! Getting to update Kat with pictures and news is always a blessing. Even though the hospital is not the place people want to end up, with nurses like Katherine they make it hard to leave. I can never thank her enough for the energy and effort she put into my care.
