Katie embraces her patients and goes above and beyond to show them compassion and empathy.
For the past 20 years, Kathleen has been an oncology nurse providing exceptional patient care. Katie embraces her patients and goes above and beyond to show them compassion and empathy. The patients in the outpatient oncology department often request her as she is so positive and friendly. Katie touches the lives of so many patients and the best part is that she doesn't even realize the impact, she does it so matter-of-factly.
This particular patient has reoccurring and aggressive breast cancer. It was her 2nd time around and she was returning for additional chemotherapy treatments. She requested that Katie be her nurse. Katie and the patient were so happy to see one another. The family was unable to stay due to COVID-19 restrictions but she felt safe and knew she was in good hands. The chemotherapy treatment she was receiving was a highly reactive drug, and that day, she had a bad reaction to the drug. Katie and the staff and the physicians stabilized her and quickly sent her to the ER. Unfortunately, her condition worsened and she passed. Katie and the staff went to the ER, comforted the family, and provided support. Katie was so broken-hearted.
The patient's family also sent a letter summing up just how much Katie meant to the patient and how much they appreciated her.
