A young woman's fiance was admitted to the Trauma ICU after a horrific accident that occurred 4 days after the couple had gotten engaged. He experienced significant trauma and complications. The woman stated she had never been so scared as she was the first 48hrs after the accident and she anticipated the worst. She stated she will never forget Kathleen in the Trauma ICU assuring her that he was going to be fine with indisputable confidence. She knew exactly what to say when he awoke and brought humor to the situation. After several weeks in the hospital as they were preparing to be discharged, they saw Kathleen in the lobby. Kathleen teared up when saw the woman's fiance. It was realized then that even though nurses must detach themselves from the emotion of their very difficult work, she saw just how much they care and that they really are affected by the patients and families that they care for.
