By simply holding the patient’s hand, Kate alleviated the high peak pressures on the ventilator and addressed the patient’s emotional needs.
Peak pressure refers to the highest pressure generated by the ventilator during inhalation as it pushes air into the lungs. While peak pressures may seem like just another intimidating number to some, experienced ICU nurses recognize them as indicators of airway obstruction. Common troubleshooting techniques include suctioning thick secretions, preventing the patient from biting the breathing tube, and ensuring the ventilator circuit is not kinked. Persistently high peak pressures are concerning, as they can potentially lead to lung damage.

When Kate's patient continued to experience high peak pressures, she resorted to the only option left—providing emotional support.

Fear. Anxiety. Loneliness. These are just a few of the emotions patients often endure during their stay in the ICU. In this case, Kate's patient was grappling with these feelings while transitioning to end-of-life care on her birthday, no less. These overwhelming emotions were contributing to her high peak pressures.

By simply holding the patient’s hand, Kate alleviated the high peak pressures on the ventilator and addressed the patient’s emotional needs.

Kate's compassion on that day should not go unnoticed. She truly deserves the DAISY Award.
