I witnessed an RN assist an 82-year-old veteran who presented to the front desk regarding a concern about a previously treated leg cellulitis. This veteran did not belong to our team, so the RN was unaware that the veteran was grieving over the loss of his wife within the last year. The veteran's clinic concern was addressed, and he was reassured that no further treatment was needed. However, she quickly assessed that the veteran needed more than a clinical visit. She listened patiently to his family history and current worries as a widower. She remained fully present and engaged with this veteran for more than 45 minutes. The duties of a nurse are demanding, and time is precious. Her commitment to serving the veteran exemplifies the VA's mission. This is a singular example of how she respects the dignity of all those she encounters. Her integrity established a trust and confidence not just between her and the veteran but also with the entire VA. A nurse that never met this veteran before honored him by her selflessness. The veteran left the office that day reassured and reaffirmed in love. Kathy is a joy to work with and a blessing to all veterans and the VA!
