Kathy has been with HOMES for over 6 years and has been a great asset to our Department. Kathy is described as "everybody's mother" she is kind, respectful and a GREAT team player.
Kathy volunteered to come in every morning at 6 am to look through our vaccine boxes to assure that we have the right amount of vaccines for our clinics. Kathy also checks through any expired medications/supplies and pulls them and replaces them. Kathy is always willing to listen to a patient and their needs she is compassionate with our Homeless Population. To be a nurse in any field you have to have a kind heart. Kathy is a nurse in a population that is difficult being that most of them have mental disorders and can be violent. She treats every single patient as though they are a family member.
I heard a story about Kathy before I came back to HOMES. The staff described a horrific story where a nurse was pulling out of her clinic and a patient got in front of her car and attempted to stop her and smashed her window. The patient repeatedly hit her car window and yelled at this nurse. The nurse, not wanting to run over this patient, found a moment in the attack to her car to drive away without hurting the patient. She drove off frantic and scared. When I asked who this nurse was, they answered it was Kathy Harrelson! I was amazed that someone who went thru this experience would return back to her job and treat her patients as if nothing happened.
It takes a very special person to work with the population we work for. Kathy proves that every single day that she comes to work. Kathy Harrelson is one of the GREAT ones!
