Katie Ball is one of the best nurses I have ever met, but today was particularly moving. We have had a patient on our unit who suffers from advanced dementia that has been difficult to manage due to her clinical complexity, and she often becomes combative and agitated. However, Katie stepped aside from her usual duties as charge nurse. She elected to prepare this patient a special snack and milkshake to make her feel more at ease, comfortable, and at home and ensure she was receiving adequate nutrition. This patient happened to sit right outside of my office, and she was very pleased and seemed much more comfortable after Katie’s efforts. It was incredibly heartwarming to see how Katie demonstrated both empathy and love for her patient through a simple but very impactful gesture. It made me think of my own loved ones and how, if they were hospitalized, I would want a nurse like her to care for them. Needless to say, I am honored to work by Katie’s side.
