Katie is beyond compassionate to all her patients and cherishes those times when she can go above and beyond, which she did for this family.
We had a patient who was placed on comfort measures, and from the first time she met the family, Katie Fiske formed an immediate bond. She was able to sit and talk with the wife about the patient's commitment to his Protestant religion, but because of the love he had for his wife, this patient converted to Catholicism. Through multiple conversations, Katie learned so much about the family. They had a wonderful extended family, and we were able to accommodate them all during this difficult time by placing him in a private room and allowing the much-needed visitation. As the time drew near, Katie was able to talk to the MD to increase the PRN Morphine to assist with his breathing. This served as a great comfort to both the patient and the family. That Sunday morning, Katie went to church and prayed for comfort and peace for the patient and family. When she came to work Sunday night, she knew it was a matter of time. She spent much time sitting with the wife and explaining what would happen and that it would most likely occur soon. She explained how the heart slowed down when the oxygen was off and that his heart was tired. The wife asked if she should call the rest of the family, and Katie said yes.

The family all arrived early in the morning and were at the bedside. Katie was giving a report to the oncoming shift and noticed his heart slowing. As she went into the room, he took his last breath and noticed the family had taken the oxygen off. They were all at the bedside and, of course, upset but immensely pleased his death was peaceful.

Katie is beyond compassionate to all her patients and cherishes those times when she can go above and beyond, which she did for this family. She told me she went home sad but felt she had done everything she could possibly do for the patient and family and was content.
