I was 34 weeks pregnant as a first-time mom when I wound up in the ER with severe fatigue and back pain, ultimately diagnosed with kidney stones. I was admitted to the hospital, and Katie Hoefs was my daytime nurse. Katie was a familiar face, a light in the room, and constantly made me feel reassured that she acknowledged my pain. 

She showcased a servant's heart and compassion, showing genuine concern for my unborn son and helping me navigate the healthcare system as a young woman of color. Little did I know, she was new to working at Tamarack Medical Center in Hayward. She carried herself with dignity and empathy and she made me feel heard and cared for. She made me feel like I mattered. I felt seen, and my role in motherhood was honored. Katie went above and beyond her role as a nurse, using her position to advocate for those who might face discrimination. I’m extremely grateful to have been under her care.
