She related that Katie was tireless in going back and forth from room to room to communicate with the patients regarding their needs, comforts and providing explanations of the nursing care/interventions.
On one particular clinical day, I was approached by the primary nurse caring for two Spanish-speaking only patients. The nurse only spoke English. This was her third day in a row having this assignment and she was quite overwhelmed with trying to communicate effectively. She came to me and asked how do you make student assignments. I said it depends on multiple factors, and then I asked why she wanted to know. She said I am so grateful to have Katie assigned as my student today. She is not only helping me tremendously in caring for the patients, but her ability to speak fluent Spanish has also been a God send. She related that Katie was tireless in going back and forth from room to room to communicate with the patients regarding their needs, comforts and providing explanations of the nursing care/interventions. This helped to allay the fears of both patients and their families in addition to helping the nurse meet the patient goals of care that day. The truly amazing thing about this assignment was that on this particular clinical day, Katie was scheduled to have an off-unit experience, and she volunteered to stay so someone else could go instead due to future scheduling issues. I also had no idea that Katie spoke fluent Spanish when the assignment was made. Being a student new to the MICU. Katie could have easily kept her bilingual talent to herself and instead chosen just to focus on her needs, but she didn't. She met the challenge and took the patients and their family's needs first. This is truly a testament to her level of caring and compassion and makes me confident that she will be an excellent RN.
