Katie's calmness and confidence helped my sister relax. Her constant monitoring and assessment kept her safe. I truly feel she made a difference in my sister’s positive outcome.
My sister was transferred from a rural hospital for a head bleed. I, as well as other family members, were frightened and thought we would never be able to talk to her again. We went from having a healthy individual to a life-threatening condition. We were overwhelmed, anxious, and stressed with not being able to see her or know what was happening. Katie came to the waiting room and took the time to communicate with the family. She was respectful. She introduced herself and kneeled to look directly at us, and she even asked for permission to talk since we were in a very busy area. She was kindhearted, calm, empathic, and honest. She escorted two of us to our loved one's bedside. At that moment, I witnessed the competence, skills, professionalism, attentiveness, and compassion she gave to my sister. Immediately, I felt the stress ease, knowing my sister was in good hands. It is just natural that a person forms an initial perception on the first impression. I felt confident with our decision in choosing SLUH thanks to Katie. Her smile, appearance, body language, demeanor, and patience gave the whole family the confidence and trust we were at the right place.
I am a retired nurse, so my standards are high, and I can be judgmental. I look for quality measures, hand washing, privacy and all core measures and Katie met them all. I know Katie was incredibly busy and I am sure she was juggling the care of many patients, but she never portrayed that to us. She answered all our questions and made us feel special and it was like we were the only patient and family. She made sure my sister was comfortable and took the time to ask if we needed anything.
I did some research about SLUH and one core value that caught my attention was Cura Personalis – care for the whole person. Katie went above and beyond. She not only cared for my sister’s body, mind, and spirit but also cared for the whole family. It was crucial my sister’s blood pressure stayed down to prevent any further injury. Katie's calmness and confidence helped my sister relax. Her constant monitoring and assessment kept her safe. I truly feel she made a difference in my sister’s positive outcome. My family and I are truly grateful for all of SLUH’s doctors and staff. Her care has been and continues to be awesome. While I am writing this, she has been a patient for over a week, and we are very pleased we have chosen SLUH.
So far my sister’s journey has been miraculous and I feel Katie started the positive road and strengthened our trust to have a positive experience. She provided the proper care at the most crucial time and made a difference to save her life and given her a life without deficit and we pray this journey continues to be positive. I am faith-based and Katie was given a talent from God. She is using her talent to help others.
