It isn't every day that a patient calls the St. Jude Outpatient Surgery Center to specifically request a nurse for an upcoming surgery, but then again, Kay isn't just any nurse. Kay was conducting a standard post-op call with this patient for a different procedure and the experience was so profound that the patient called back to ask that Kay be assigned to her for an upcoming cataract procedure.
"Kay has a gracious attitude that put me at ease. She repeatedly asked me if there was anything she could do to make me more comfortable," the patient said. "She took her time starting my IV because she knew how nervous I was. It was such a painless experience. And to top it off, she then took the time to pray with me."
This type of sacred encounter does not surprise those who know Kay best - her fellow caregivers. She has been recognized many times by patients and colleagues for her extraordinary care.
