She made me smile and built a rapport with me, and from that moment on, I trusted her. She never let anything define me beyond the care I needed in that moment, and she approached my situation without judgment—only compassion.
Kayla Gilman is her name. I made sure to ask for her first and last name because of the way she cared for me.

When I came into the hospital, a vessel had ruptured in my brain and was bleeding. I was in pain, frustrated, and unsure of what to expect. I struggled with fear and uncertainty, which I expressed through anger and impatience. It was a difficult time, both physically and emotionally.

Then Kayla came in. From the moment she entered my room, she focused on my well-being—checking my vital signs, asking if I had eaten, if the light was too bright for my eyes, and ensuring I was comfortable. She treated me with kindness and respect, helping me feel seen and heard. She made me smile and built a rapport with me, and from that moment on, I trusted her. She never let anything define me beyond the care I needed in that moment, and she approached my situation without judgment—only compassion.

As a 53-year-old African American woman, I have seen the stigmas that create barriers to receiving the same quality healthcare offered to others. But Kayla didn’t pre-judge me. Instead, she made me feel cared for and respected, like someone was truly going the extra mile. Because of that, I opened up to her. She connected me with a hospital social worker and even brought in the doctor to answer my concerns about my job, the paperwork I needed, and what my condition would mean moving forward. She was there for me—without restrictions, without limits—doing what she was meant to do: helping others.

If I ever had to go through a situation like this again, or if my kids had to, I would want Kayla there. She walked into my room with a smile, and she showed me a better way to live. With that, I had a better attitude. She not only helped me physically, but she helped me mentally every single moment I spent with her.

I looked forward to seeing her again, though she only worked two shifts in my unit. I feel better now.

I feel comfortable being here, and I just really wanted to express how much she impacted me.

As she took me by the hand and walked with me for a few minutes to help me regain stability, I noticed the DAISY Award QR code on the wall. I knew immediately that I had to submit this nomination. I wanted to do it—I needed to do it—because I am so grateful to have met someone like her.

Because of Kayla, I even chose my primary physician here in Castro Valley. She showed me that not everyone is the same. Through our conversations, I started feeling better physically. I even realized I didn’t need heavy pain medications as much because her presence and care helped ease my tension. She changed the way I think about my health and taught me that I don’t have to get frustrated—I have options.

Kayla is a remarkable person with a heart full of unconditional love. She embodies inclusiveness, diversity, and compassion in every way.

The Golden Rule says to treat others how you wish to be treated—mission accomplished, Eden Medical Center, Castro Valley! Thank you, Kayla!
