I believe the amazing care that Kayla provided to my mom in those first couple of hours after her arrival by ambulance was critical in laying the excellent foundation for my mom’s health to progress as well as it did in the days that followed.
When my mom was brought by ambulance to the emergency department at Sanford for what turned out to be sepsis, Kayla was her first caretaker after the EMTs. There was a lot happening, but Kayla worked efficiently and calmly, clearly communicating her actions to her fellow medical team members, my mom, and me.
She worked with some nurses who were training, and she was patient and kind with them, carefully and gently correcting them if needed and providing direction as necessary, but never letting it slow down the care my mom required. She patiently answered our questions and was great to know, as it allowed me to give my mom the best care possible.

This was all new and frightening for the patient, and with the progression of her neurological changes, it was extremely helpful to have a nurse who was calm, confident, and an advocate for her. This was a challenging decision to be evaluated in the ED, simply due to the stability of her condition and the common concerns regarding misuse of ED resources.
It was hard to bring her in, but you also validated the concerning nature of the symptoms she was experiencing and confirmed that our decision to seek emergency care was necessary, given the progression. We are eternally grateful for a nurse like you and for the care that you provide. Thank you so much!
