L and Kaylen demonstrated exceptional compassion and empathy throughout the patient's journey, honoring his wishes with sensitivity and grace.
I am thrilled to nominate L and Kaylen, our outstanding cardiogenic shock coordinators, for the DAISY Award. Their exceptional dedication and unwavering commitment to providing compassionate care recently shone brightly in a challenging case involving an advanced heart failure patient.
Patient-Centered Excellence:
L and Kaylen's compassion and expertise were instrumental during the prolonged hospitalization of a patient supported with temporary mechanical circulatory support. Despite the complexities of the situation and the ultimate inability to proceed with a VAD, they displayed an extraordinary level of care that extended beyond medical interventions.
Recognition from Medical Director:
Our medical director aptly acknowledged L and Kaylen, highlighting their steadfast attention, care, and most importantly, the deep compassion they exhibited towards the patient and his family. In a moment where medical limitations met the patient's wishes, L and Kaylen guided the family through a difficult decision-making process with empathy and support. Dignity and Comfort in Final Moments: As the patient and his family elected to turn off support, L and Kaylen ensured his remaining hours were spent in accordance with his wishes. They brought him his favorite breakfast and provided invaluable education to the family, creating an environment of dignity and comfort. Kaylen's eloquent account of the patient's final moments reflects the profound impact of their care in bringing solace during a challenging time. "I am trying to focus on - we were able to give him more time. Maybe not at home in comfortable surroundings. But when I got to the floor to turn off his impella today, we were waiting for his daughter to return from the cafeteria. When I arrived, he was peacefully sleeping. And he woke up and looked at the clock and said to his wife - 'What are we doing? It's 3 o'clock.' He was ready."
Compassion Beyond Expectations:
L and Kaylen demonstrated exceptional compassion and empathy throughout the patient's journey, honoring his wishes with sensitivity and grace. Their commitment, seen and unseen, goes above and beyond the call of duty, making a lasting impact on the lives of those they serve.
In recognition of their extraordinary efforts, I wholeheartedly recommend L and Kaylen for the DAISY Award. Their exemplary care embodies the essence of compassionate healthcare, leaving an indelible mark on our patient's final moments and the hearts of all who witness their dedicated service.
Note: This is Kaylen's 2nd DAISY Award!
