She skillfully walked that tightrope and was very empathetic to our hopes for his recovery while helping us fully understand the gravity of his condition and the low odds of any significant future recovery.
My stepson was admitted to ICU following massive heart failure. In order to try to stabilize his condition, he was placed into a medically induced sedated state, and connected to an unimaginable number of organ-support machines and tubes. Seeing his condition in that ICU bed was something that I'll never forget. Sadly, he was unable to recover, and the decision to take him off the life support system was made. During these dark days, the actions of each of the assigned nurses were admirable. To our family members, though, it was Kaylie who stood out. She was forced to work around the parade of our family members who had traveled to the ICU in support of my stepson. She was so very patient in answering our questions about his declining medical condition. Her explanations were not in medical jargon but instead in words that non-medical people could understand. She skillfully walked that tightrope and was very empathetic to our hopes for his recovery while helping us fully understand the gravity of his condition and the low odds of any significant future recovery. Multiple family members came to the same conclusion about Kaylie's actions and words - "WOW, SHE WAS GOOD." To me, she felt like a friend. Thank you, Kaylie.
