Just wanted to tell you a little story about our 4th quarter DAISY winner in
December of 2009.
As everyone gathered for the DAISY presentation, the DAISY winner Kelly
Beckwith was busy helping whoever she could. In fact when her name was
called surprisingly she was actually cutting the cinnamon rolls for treats
after the presentation.
She received 4 unique nominations. They were all touching. One was from a
gal in Georgia who happened to be in Wisconsin on business and got sick
enough to be hospitalized. She ended up at our hospital Community Memorial
Hospital in Menomonee Falls, WI.
Her nomination was "There was not a single situation for which Kelly
deserves this award, but, in fact, every encounter I had with her
exemplified what bedside nursing should be. I found myself 1000 miles away
from home and very ill. Kelly's confidence in what she does was a breath of
fresh air. She is a jewel and I so appreciate her care during my hospital
stay--she made a very difficult time for me easier. Many Thanks Nancy
Thornton"
I always call every person who nominated our DAISY winner in case they want
(and we encourage it) to attend the DAISY presentation of the person they
nominated. When I called Nancy, she couldn't stop giving our hospital credit
and Kelly the credit for her excellent care. She talked about the fact that
she had some blood drawn while she was in our hospital and it showed the
possibility of cancer. When she got home to Georgia, she did follow up as
Community Memorial Hospital recommended. It did turn out to be a Lymphoma
(cancer). She considered her sickness and falling ill enough to need
hospitalization a godsend, because without the hospital stay she would have
never knew about the cancer.
