I have no doubt in my mind that it was Kelly who saved that patient's life! She took action when action was needed and previously ignored.
I came in for an extra shift and it was quickly noted by fellow night shift RN Kelly Dyer (even before report) that the patient was having a life-threatening event. Kelly was outstanding as she took control of the situation from the minute she stepped in the room. She immediately noticed the patient did not look good and sprang into action. The patient was tachycardic and tachypneic throughout the day, but it was never addressed by the daytime staff. By the time Kelly entered the room she noted the patient was diaphoretic, breathing heavily and very tachycardic. She immediately called the OB team who the patient was admitted under to evaluate and never once left the patient’s bedside. All while obtaining an EKG, contacting the vascular access team for a new IV and lab work, having a CT ordered and calling an RRT right up until the patient was wheeled out the door. The patient even mentioned that she felt better knowing Kelly was there for her and how she continuously spoke to her reassuringly. Through her persistence in speaking to the OB physicians and calling the RRT, she was able to get the patient taken to CT who had originally stated they were much too busy with ED patients to do the patient's scan. The severity of that patient’s scan revealed a life-threatening situation where she was rushed into emergency surgery and ultimately ended up intubated in the ICU. I have no doubt in my mind that it was Kelly who saved that patient's life! She took action when action was needed and previously ignored. If it was another RN assuming care for that patient, it is likely that patient would have had a very tragic outcome. I cannot stress enough how phenomenal she was! Even the OB team and Rapid Response physicians were impressed by her quick thinking and proactive response. She 100% deserves to be recognized for her heroics that night and I feel a DAISY Award is definitely in order.
