Kelsey ensured I was comfortable and just sat with me, walked me through a few slow breathing techniques, and suggested I listen to calming music, which I did. She never rushed me and just let me take my time getting comfortable.
I am a new patient to Rex Wakefield Infusion Center. I have struggled with severe “white coat” syndrome. Even thinking about going to the doctor or medical facility can be overwhelming. I was referred for infusions after being diagnosed with high blood pressure. When I entered the infusion Center for my first treatment, I was greeted by a sweet nurse named Kelsey. I imagine she knew I was nervous right away and was so kind and welcoming. Making sure I was comfortable. What I did not plan for, however, was that my blood pressure would be through the roof, and I would not be able to do my infusion in that state. We decided to try again later that afternoon when, hopefully, my blood pressure meds would have been in my system longer.

I came back that afternoon just as anxious but when I saw that Kelsey was waiting for me, I felt better. Again, my blood pressure was high, but I knew that this was a needed treatment. Kelsey ensured I was comfortable and just sat with me, walked me through a few slow breathing techniques, and suggested I listen to calming music, which I did. She never rushed me and just let me take my time getting comfortable. She could have easily said this isn't my job. Her job was to start the infusion and watch me throughout, not to calm my nerves or be my support.

I was eventually able to get the infusion, but I continued to watch Kelsey while getting my infusion. She was like a busy bee going from patient to patient with her duties. Also, more times than I can count she was called on by her fellow nurses to help them with patients. Running from one end of the floor to the other and never once lost the smile on her face or the gentle way about her.

When I returned from my second infusion, I had very much the same situation with Kelsey, but what I also observed this time was that she had made a giant handmade poster board card that I believe must have been for one of her fellow nurses and was having long time patients sign the card. Kelsey's dedication to her patients and her fellow coworkers were quite impressive. I know that I will be looking for her sweet smile and calming demeanor when I am there again.
