Instead of going home to bed, like she probably wanted to do after a long shift, she spent her time and money outside of work to make sure this man had something tangible to celebrate a day that would also be filled with grief.
I am a shift coordinator in the ICU and had the pleasure of working with Kelsey Kendall in the IICU. I knew then that she was a wonderful nurse who gave compassionate care to all of her patients, but I learned first-hand the impact she can have on her patients and their families a few weeks ago. My Uncle and Aunt were involved in a car accident, and my aunt did not survive the accident. My Uncle was brought here with a sternal injury. She was his primary nurse in the IICU during his stay. During this time, she gave him wonderful care and kept the family updated on his condition. She even prayed with him at the bedside when family was not able to be there. On the day that would have been my aunt's birthday, she brought him in a care package to try and ease his sorrow. Kelsey went above and beyond for my uncle and our family. I will never forget what an impact she had on him and the entire family. I am proud to work with such a sweet, hardworking, and compassionate nurse. Eskenazi is a better place because of the care she gives to our patients.

For this specific example, an elderly couple came into Eskenazi after a drunk driver wrecked into their car. The wife died in our Emergency Room. Kelsey had this patient in the IICU and showed such compassion and care for not only his physical needs but also his emotional and spiritual needs. She found out that his wife's birthday was the next day, so she left work and went shopping for gifts to help cheer him up and celebrate the day. Instead of going home to bed, like she probably wanted to do after a long shift, she spent her time and money outside of work to make sure this man had something tangible to celebrate a day that would also be filled with grief. This is just an example of how she is as a nurse and she deserves to be celebrated for that. She is a great example of what a nurse can do for others through our interactions and our time with them. I admire her so much, and I am proud to work beside her at Eskenazi.
