We currently have patient on 3 South who has been here for about 2 1/2 weeks so far. The patient is confused and miserable. This weekend, Ken had her as his patient. The patient was getting frustrated with having a sitter in the room (me)and was just asking why God had forsaken her and she would just cry. Ken was great with her. He came in and calmed her down and just talked to her. The patient really seemed to respond well to him. He told her a joke to cheer her up and for the first time in 2 1/2 weeks she laughed. She laughed so hard that it brought tears to her eyes. The next night, I again was sitting with the patient. She asked about Ken. She started laughing again and said that it felt so good to laugh and it had made her whole day. She said she forgotten how to laugh and she had Ken to thank reminding her. She said that he made more of an impression on her than anyone during this stay. When she starts to have a moment, she'll sit back and think about Ken's joke and just laugh and repeat the joke. Ken sat with this patient and calmed her down more than once and this patient really responds to him. Ken has reassured this patient, has shown so much compassion and it truly made a difference in this patient's stay.
