It was Kevin's unique qualities in leadership, compassion, integrity, and inclusion that made me feel respected and an active member in my own healthcare treatment and recovery.
I had been in the hospital for several days and went through about 6-7 nurses. Kevin stood out to me immediately as a stellar nurse. Seeing Kevin in the evening for the night shift brought me great comfort and peace during a horrible and painful hospital stay. It was his unique qualities in leadership, compassion, integrity, and inclusion that made me feel respected and an active member in my own healthcare treatment and recovery. Kevin went beyond his normal nursing duties to find out information for me, advocated on my behalf to my physicians, and made sure I always was provided the best care possible. He briefed all of the nurses who took over his shift in front of me and made sure I could contribute to the briefing and the conversations that took place. When he joined the night shift he also asked me about what had happened during the day and made sure to clarify orders from the doctors that neither I nor he understood. He made sure to tell me stories and distract me from painful or uncomfortable procedures such as blood draws, early morning vital readings, catheter placements, and scans. He was such an excellent nurse in every way. The night I was released I made sure to find Kevin to tell him goodbye and thank him for what he did. Now when I reflect on my time at St. Luke's I remember Kevin and I'm grateful he was my nurse during my scary healthcare emergency. He is a true DAISY Nurse.
