Khldon took the time to explain things to calm L down when he would get anxious. Khldon’s care made L’s day light up and, in the end, gave him a positive experience in a critical situation on two different occasions.
My son, L, was intubated for 7 days for the first time at age 15 in March 2024. Khldon Alomari was his first Registered Nurse at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Kaiser Downey, California. L was intubated a second time in August 2024; Khldon remembered L and how he was able to communicate with him, though L could not speak. They had developed a form of communication with hand signals, and L became so comfortable that he wanted to remain awake while intubated! L was appreciative of all the quality care that Khldon gave; it truly helped him keep fighting to recover. Both times, Khldon was patient, understanding, kind, sweet, compassionate, and very attentive to all of L’s needs and L was very needy due to his illness. Yet, Khldon’s work ethic showed his passion for his career to give patients, such as L, the best experience possible, though he was fighting for his life. Khldon even made sure I, L’s mother, ate by bringing me food while reminding me to take care of myself so I could continue to care for my son, and I needed that reminder.
Although every person in the PICU was excellent in providing genuine care, Khldon stood out for his knowledge in utilizing his resources, going above and beyond as he often did. L had a difficult time sleeping before his extubation. Khldon went out of his way to bring L a “Quiet Pac,” which contains an eye mask, ear plugs, etc.… He also played Lullaby soothing music for L. These may seem like little things, but they are what got L to sleep well and set him up for a successful extubation. Khldon took the time to explain things to calm L down when he would get anxious. Khldon’s care made L’s day light up and, in the end, gave him a positive experience in a critical situation on two different occasions. L said to Khldon as we said goodbye, “Thank you for everything Poppa Khldon” and L left happy instead of traumatized.
I hope Khldon’s hard work is recognized. Thank you Khldon, your outstanding teamwork with your wonderful colleagues will never be forgotten because people will always remember how you made them feel.
