The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit recently had a patient who was a Sudanese refugee; this patient could not understand the menu, printed in English, and spoke minimal English. Kim Brown tried her best to communicate with her patient to best describe the items on the menu but because there were so many foods to choose from, Kim knew that the patient would likely not be able to understand.
Kim then used Google translator and entered the entire menu in English and was able to have the choices printed in Arabic. Kim brought the translated menu to her patient; the patient was so surprised to see what Kim had done for her and was then able to select what she wanted to eat for dinner. With the limited English that the patient knew, she was able to say to Kim, "God Bless," showing her appreciation for what Kim had done for her.
When the time came for this patient to be discharged, the patient acknowledged that her religion was different from Kim's but told Kim, "I will pray that my God will bring blessings to you." At this point, the patient gave Kim a big hug -an experience that Kim has told me she will never forget.
Kim displays a kind and caring heart for each patient she cares for no matter one's race or religion, or any other factor. Kim strives to make her patients feel comfortable and secure while they are under her care. This is a perfect example of Kim going the extra mile for someone who has probably been through more, from a cultural perspective, than any of us would ever be able to imagine. Kim is well deserving of the DAISY Award.
