Kimberly paged me with perhaps the most unexpected and important message I've received in three decades as an obstetrician. A woman who was post-op day 4 after an uncomplicated Cesarean section had been discharged earlier that morning by our rounding team. Kimberly told me that she wasn't exactly sure why, but she felt something wasn't quite right and wasn't comfortable with the patient being discharged until I had laid eyes on her one more time. A day later, this woman was intubated in the ICU awaiting transfer to OHSU for a possible liver transplant. It is no exaggeration to say that this woman owes her life to Kimberly and the other nurses on Mother/Baby. Kimberly's clinical awareness and courage in making the call without even having a firm story as to what was happening was extraordinary.
In dealing with the patient (whose English was minimal), Kimberly showed exceptional patience and compassion. She kept her family involved, but not overwhelmed, and helped with the new baby.
Kimberly is a diligent and thorough nurse. In this case, she followed her principles and judgment even though the easier choice would have been to ignore the situation. Kimberly works hard and is deeply committed to her profession, setting a high example for all of us.
