It can be a challenge to be kind and empathetic to a patient who is being verbally abusive and threatening AMA. Kristen rose above all the difficulties that this patient was throwing at her to show professionalism, kindness, and to continue to be a patient advocate. Her empathy alone enacted crisis management during a Behavioral Health Code. While tension was high and patience was short, Kristen went so far as to offer her own lunch to the patient who threatened to leave AMA to go to McDonald's. Her bedside manner needs to be recognized and applauded. I was so impressed with her patience. She showed a perfect example of how nurses should act in a difficult situation.
