We have a patient on our unit who has been with us for a significant amount of time. She is an adult with the mental capacity of a young child. As Christmas was approaching, Kristen took it upon herself to make a trip to buy this patient Christmas gifts. Luckily, because of Kristen's selfless act, she made this patient's holiday extra special. When the patient woke up Christmas day, she asked her nurse, "did Santa come?" the nurse was able to answer "Yes!" I knew that in that moment Kristen made this patient's day as her eyes lit up for the first time in months. The patient was able to open a Frozen themed watch (one of the patient's favorite movies), earrings (since the patient hadn't been able to wear any her whole stay), lip balm, lotion and her favorite gift, a pink lava lamp! If Kristen had not brought in gifts, this patient would have had no gifts to open on Christmas morning. This was especially moving since the patient didn't receive any visitors on Christmas. Kristen not only showed compassion above and beyond what was expected but also did so without looking for recognition or praise. It is for these reasons we believe Kristen Daubenbis deserves the recognition of The DAISY Award.
