There are times in our nursing careers when we are positioned to make a difference in someone's life. Recently, we experienced a tragic situation at Kootenai, where Kristen was the nurse involved. A mother and her two children were in a motor vehicle accident that resulted in one child's fatality. This sad event impacted our community deeply and affected us as health care providers caring for them. The mother had visited the hospital several times, and on this occasion, Kristen was her nurse. It was then that the mother began to open up about her loss and the care of her surviving child, and Kristen was there to listen. Kristen showed empathy towards her situation; she cried with her and offered the best advice she could. I believe that Kristen was meant to be in this role because she could significantly impact this mother's journey of healing and acceptance. It feels as though the stars aligned for Kristen to be her nurse that day. Kristen is an exceptional person. She works tirelessly to manage the demands of often overwhelming days. She always wears a smile and relates as a mother to the one she was caring for.
