I was admitted to St. John's at 37 weeks in gestation with pre-eclampsia. The decision was made to induce me that evening due to risks associated with my high blood pressure. This was my first pregnancy and not the delivery process I had envisioned for myself or my baby. Kristin Flinn was very calming throughout the evening, frequently checking in on me, making sure all my needs were met, and overall being very reassuring. She even tracked down a sugar-free popsicle for me as I had gestational diabetes.
During the active labor process, Kristin was so encouraging during the 3 hours of pushing. She was like my own personal coach. Unfortunately, my labor did not progress, and my baby started showing signs of distress in the womb. Kristin calmly called the doctors for help. From the look on her face, I knew something bad was happening, but she was steadfast, holding my hand and walking me through each step, advocating that I got the care I needed.
The decision was made to proceed with an emergency C-section. Kristin was with me every step of the way, staying after her shift should have ended and even through me vomiting on her shoes. My son was born moments later, and she brought him over for me to see him before he was taken to the NICU. The chance to see him even for a few seconds meant the world to me.
As if this wasn't enough, the following day, Kristin came to check on me and inquired about how my son was doing even though I was no longer her patient. Kristin provided outstanding care, compassion, and helped to make what could have been a terrible labor experience have a much better outcome. She is an extraordinary nurse and I can't imagine anyone more deserving of the DAISY Award.
