Kristina advocated for his needs and understood that he needed additional attention from his procedural team and brought them to his bedside. She respected his decisions and choices and showed nursing excellence by using her post-procedural knowledge to help my husband remain as calm and comfortable as possible.
On Tuesday my husband E was in CV OBS for a two-location needle biopsy procedure. Kristina joined in E's care post-procedure with the recovery from the anesthesia process. From the moment that Kristina called me that I could join my husband in his room, we connected. She was exceptionally kind and compassionate to E. He was in excruciating pain prior to the procedure and as the medication from the biopsy wore off the pain returned in force. With his pain, he also began to vomit extensively. She was speaking to the ARNP, who was overseeing his care constantly as well as bringing the IR physician to bedside, and together, we all discussed what E's options were to help him get home safely. I disclosed at that time that I was a nurse with a recent history of ICU nursing and was comfortable with caring for him at home, as long as I had the correct medications and E felt comfortable with the group's decisions. We discussed a range of medications and needs for him and came to an agreement that E understood and was comfortable with. She was what we needed at the moment, and both of us felt how much she cared for and was vested in E's recovery and well-being. She educated me on what to look for at the biopsy sites, symptoms if bleeding was happening, and overall care. This was an area of nursing that I was unfamiliar with and did not assume that I knew just because I was a nurse. I appreciated that she understood that I was the wife at the bedside and not the nurse. It meant the world to me. For E and me, she exhibited everything that a DAISY Nurse should exhibit. The demonstration of Providence's core values, her supportive approach to his care and always checking in on me to see that I was doing okay, educating both E and me on what to look for and how to care for E over the next few days of recovery, she definitely advocated for E's care at the right time by bringing in the medical team to assist, and overall was an amazing caregiver. We cannot thank her enough.
