Kylie Halbach took care of a very young patient in his 30s after he had open heart surgery and was admitted to CPACU. The post-operative course was complicated by a large bleed in his brain and herniation, requiring emergent surgery. Kylie was very compassionate to the patient and his family. She coordinated multiple visitations and difficult conversations with the providers and the multidisciplinary team. Kylie was assigned to care for this patient the following day, and she continued caring for and supporting the patient and his family. She took the patient to multiple CT scans, had discussions with the sharing network, and remained with the patient and his family when the decision was made to withdraw care and the patient passed. Although the outcome was painful for all of us, we were comforted by the kind words from the patient's wife, who expressed her gratitude and immense appreciation for the excellent care that her husband received and how she saw this as a Silver Lining in the midst of her loss.
