I am nominating Lacey for the DAISY Award because she changed my world during my treatment for rectal cancer. I was treated with Chemo and Radiation simultaneously which is extremely painful. Not only did she have great assessment skills but she had great compassion. The first morning she met me after 1 week of chemo, she immediately saw that I was in pain and distressed as the chemo had caused my mouth to break out in canker sores. My tongue was so swollen making it hard to take fluids. I was in extreme pain, dehydrated and could not quit crying. She arranged for IV's, pain meds, antidepressants and antianxiety meds which eased the way. She found me a more compassionate doctor. When it was time to do the second round of chemo I was so emotionally challenged by how difficult the first round was I told her that I could not do a second round. She told me with a very compassionate voice that she really cared about me and if she had to drive to my house every day and drag me into the clinic she would. Lacey worked to find meds to ease the second round of chemo. She helped turn the corner on that decision which might have saved my life. But Lacey's best quality is her compassionate listening. Thich Nhat Hanh, the Vietnamese Buddhist monk talks about deep listening when a person really feels heard and the listening is very healing. Lacey has the gift of being a fantastic nurse who goes way beyond the what is expected and is a deep listener which heals the heart.
