LaRae would leave the nursery to do some of her work, and just when I needed another pair of hands the most, there she was.
LaRae Bearden, RN has many roles in our NICU in addition to being a bedside caregiver. She is our lead preceptor, ensuring all of our new nurses have a thorough orientation as well as making sure we are all up to date with our competencies. She is the one we call when we have questions about a new process, even if she is at home. She leads our bereavement team making sure we have the tools necessary to help our families when they need our support the most. I am sure if you ask any nurse, doctor, resident, HUC or respiratory therapist in the NICU they can share a heartfelt story about LaRae.
A very recent encounter with LaRae went as follows: The unit was very busy, and I was caring for a very tiny, very sick baby (14 oz.!). I was very busy at my baby's bedside, as were my roommates caring for their babies. Before I even had the chance to lay my hands on my baby LaRae was at my bedside offering assistance. She was on a much-needed "desk day" to catch up with all of her responsibilities, but she wanted to let me know she was there if I needed anything. I gladly accepted her help throughout the day, and together we were able to provide exceptional care for this tiny baby.
It was as if she had a sixth sense all day. LaRae would leave the nursery to do some of her work, and just when I needed another pair of hands the most, there she was. She also willingly agreed to be the admission nurse if needed. This is not a unique story about LaRae as I mentioned earlier. This is how LaRae is every day. She has a calming presence on the unit, is knowledgeable, a valued resource, and a friend to all. The parents notice it as well and she forms instant comforting, trusting relationships with them.
