She excelled at accommodating his unique treatment requirements, was consistently understanding of his mental health struggles, and generously provided comfort and encouragement.
We found Laura to be an exceptional example of what a nurse can be. Initially, Laura was scheduled routinely along with others into J's cancer care journey. Still, if it hadn't been for her love and devotion during his final two cycles, J might not have found the stamina to continue and complete treatment. The anxiety associated with many health challenges overtook J. It was Laura's steady, joyful support that enabled him to persevere. She excelled at accommodating his unique treatment requirements, was consistently understanding of his mental health struggles, and generously provided comfort and encouragement. We would selfishly like to think there was a special bond among the three of us, but truthfully, Laura demonstrated the ability to make each of her patients feel extraordinary. One quiet wintery afternoon, as my husband slept, Laura was at his treatment bay to say, "I've been waiting to spend some time with you." She succinctly shared her personal pain in caring for and losing a loved one. In those moments, I became acutely aware of how intuitively she understood my heartache. Lather, when our request for Laura to continue in the role of infusion nurse failed to reach the scheduler, it was Laura's firm insistence that made it happen. Laura has been sensitive to the subtle details that enhanced J's care experience while simultaneously providing an appropriate response to my concerns. She radiates her love of nursing and genuine affection for the patients she serves. This we know, because we have been the grateful beneficiaries of Nurse Laura's refined skill set!
